Inchmahome & Mary Queen of
Scots
Inchmahome Priory lies on Inchmahome
island, one of three islands which lie in the middle of Lake of Menteith
and was founded in 1238. The priory is served by a ferry which runs
regularly from April to September. The ferry is based near Port of
Menteith which is about five minutes from Aberfoyle by
car.
Inchmahome is reputed to be one of the
favorite childhood haunts of Mary Queen of Scots, and has inspired writers
and poets alike over the ages. Although the Priory is a ruin there is
still enough of it left standing to provide great interest to those who
walk around, whether they are interested in old graves, ancient
architecture or history. This is one of those rare places where one can
imagine just what it was like for the people who lived on the island. Mary
Queen of Scots also used the priory during her short reign, particularly
in 1547, where she felt safe from the English Army.
This is such a wonderful setting for a
picnic, do take a packed lunch so that you can enjoy the peaceful
surroundings at your leisure. You can buy sandwiches etc from the local
shops in Aberfoyle, though for a luxurious treat please ask Ann for a
packed lunch; great value for money and especially made for you.
